Chao Deng

North Africa Correspondent, The Wall Street Journal

Chao Deng is based in Cairo, covering North Africa for The Wall Street Journal. She writes about the region's economy, politics, human rights and climate change.

For a decade previously, Chao reported on China. She focused on its economy and financial system, writing about how an economic slowdown impacted business and consumers.

In 2021, Chao won the Livingston Award for International Reporting, for her coverage of the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic from inside Wuhan. She was part of a WSJ team that was a Pulitzer finalist for a series on President Xi Jinping's tightening grip on China.

Chao has also written about Chinese culture, society and politics. Barred from returning to the country as a journalist in 2020, she was for a while based in Taiwan.

Chao first joined the Journal in 2012, covering finance in Shanghai. She is fluent in Mandarin and learning Arabic.
