Katie Deighton

Reporter, The Wall Street Journal

Katie Deighton is a reporter covering customer experience, user experience and product design for The Wall Street Journal’s CMO Today section.

Her articles explore how companies and customers intersect, either in harmony or—more often than not—in friction. That line of inquiry sees her report on all industries, covering everything from app design to accessible deodorants, as well as the machinations of the ever-automating customer service sector. Much of her work centers on how and why technology and the web continue to fail users. She also covers breaking news and trends in marketing.

Before joining the Journal, Katie was senior editor at The Drum, a U.K.-based marketing and media trade publication. From New York she covered companies’ marketing and media investments, as well as the financials and business strategies of the “big six” global advertising companies.

She relocated to the U.S. from the U.K. in 2018. Prior to the move she covered European advertising for The Drum in London, and began her career reporting on the British live events industry.

Katie is a graduate of the University of Bristol and first trained as a journalist at the Press Association in London. After years of living and working nomadically, she finally settled in Brooklyn in 2021.
