Nicholas Bariyo is a reporter covering East Africa and the Great Lakes Region for The Wall Street Journal’s Africa bureau.

He is based in Kampala, Uganda, where he writes about politics, economics, conflict and health from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Ethiopia. Nicholas joined the Journal as a newswires reporter in 2005.

In 2020, Nicholas was part of a Journal team that won awards from the Society of Publishers in Asia for investigative reporting and business reporting, recognizing coverage of Huawei. His reporting on Huawei-supported surveillance of Ugandan dissidents was also a finalist for a Gerald Loeb award.

Born in Western Uganda, he holds a bachelor’s degree from Uganda’s Makerere University, Kampala, majoring in literature and English language studies. He previously worked as a reporter for the United Nations news agency, IRIN.
