In July, some scientists claimed to find a superconductor that would work at room temperature and ambient pressure. Such a finding would be groundbreaking, but experts are skeptical about the research. WSJ explains why investors are closely watching this discovery space. Illustration: Yiyang Cao

The University of Rochester is investigating the work of Ranga Dias, a physicist who claimed to have made progress toward superconductivity at room temperature.

Work that Dias and colleagues published in the journal Nature in March claimed a breakthrough toward unrealized efforts to transmit electricity more efficiently.
